The Milk Production Process
When the udder is stimulated for milk letdown, usually by washing,
stripping or suckling by the calf, nerve impulses pass up to the
cow's brain. These impulses cause the pituitary gland to release
the hormone known as oxytocin. Oxytocin is carried to the udder
through the bloodstream.
When oxytocin reaches the udder, through the bloodstream, it causes
the contraction of the muscles surrounding each alveolus. This forces
milk into the ducts and cisterns. It takes approximately 40-60 seconds
for oxytocin produced by the pituitary gland to reach the udder
and start milk letdown.
